DSF Announcements and News

DSF Advances to Nationals in the We The People Competition.

Please consider helping them get there!

The 21-student team from Douglas Freeman High School recently qualified to the national competition for We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution.  The program is a nationally acclaimed government and civics curriculum, designed to help students understand the history and principles of our Constitution and Bill of Rights.

The national competition takes place in Washington, D.C. over three days in April, and only 56 teams from across the nation will compete.

The cost to participate as a team in the national competition is approximately $27,000.00. The students are fundraising to make their journey possible. To that end, they have established a GoFundMe page at https://www.gofundme.com/we-the-people-national-finals-2017. Any donation, from $5 up, will help tremendously.

Thanks so much for your consideration and your support!

Heroin: The Hardest Hit

Please join us on Monday April 3 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Godwin High School, for a special event. Godwin High School, Freeman High School, and the Henrico Heroin Task Force are partnering with the Virginia Attorney General’s office to present the sobering video “Heroin: The Hardest Hit.” Attorney General Mark Herring will introduce the film and also lead the panel discussion following the film, incorporating questions from the audience.

The panel will feature a distinguished group of professionals, including a physician, an FBI agent, and a Mental Health professional. Also on the panel will be community members, including Jenny Derr, who lost her son as a result of a heroin overdose, two people in recovery and one who is currently incarcerated, all as a result of substance use disorder.

Beginning at 6:30 p.m., and immediately following the program, exhibitors from various mental health and addiction/recovery services and agencies will be on hand to answer questions and distribute materials as needed.

This program is open to the entire community and we encourage everyone to attend. In order to fight this, we must accept the reality that heroin addiction is a wide-spread problem that affects all ages, races, and socio-economic groups. Please plan to attend this most informative, moving, and important event. Godwin High School is located at 2101 Pump Road, Henrico VA 23238.

No hard-copy ticket will be required to attend this free event, but we do ask that attendees register at  https://heroinhardesthitgodwinfreeman.eventbrite.com.

Parent Information: Drug Use warning Signs

Soon our students will be out of school with idle time on their hands.  If parents are working, children - young and old - spend more time unsupervised, looking for something to do, right or wrong.  Now is the time to get unneeded and unused medications out of your house and out of your medicine cabinet.  Anyone who reads the paper, follows the news online or watches news on TV knows what a problem prescription drug abuse is and how it can be a gateway to heroin and other drugs.  We are losing far too many young people to this horrible epidemic.

Given this situation, Bremo Pharmacy is doing its part to get unneeded or unused medications out of people's homes and medicine cabinets.  As a service to the community, we have installed a permanent Drug Take back box in our pharmacy at 2024 Staples Mill Road.

You need not wait for the once a year Drug Take back day.  Our Drug Take back box is available for the public's use anytime our pharmacy is open:  Monday - Friday 9:00am - 6:00pm and Saturday 9:00am - 1:00pm.  There is no charge, there is no catch - it is truly a community service to get unneeded and unused medications out of our home and out of the hands of our children - young and old.
